Fantastic start to a new series...

Of all of Erik Schubach's stories, and I've read and loved them all, this one may have just become my new favorite. Being set in a post apocalyptic future, we get to experience a whole new world of knights, gypsies, techromancers, and magic. Even though the backstory and world mechanisms can get a bit complicated in places, it all still works and as a reader you're able to follow along. Ultimately it all seems to blend together to create a beautifully developed backdrop for the story.
The main character Laney who goes from being a simple herder to being thrust into the world of nobility is well written and easy to connect with. Her relationship with Lady Celeste is endearing, and I loved how it slowly builds throughout.
If you are a fan of fantasy and magic then you'll definitely enjoy this one. And if you've read any of Schubach's other stories then this one will make you feel right at home. Fantastic start to a new series. Glad to add this to my library :)

BEYOND 5 STARS!!!!

I was tempted to write a review half way through the book, then I decided to wait. This book is a combined awsomeness of sci-fi, fanasty romance. Seriously this book was what I was looking for in, I mean come on lady Knights!!! So it goes like this Laney is a special commoner because she has the abilities that most people including the nobles do not have and she is strong minded for a short person. Lol yeah I'm 4'11" so I get to hear a lot of short people jokes myself. However, the day she "ignites" (her special powers wakes up) is the same day she meets her soulmate Lady Celeste. So I'm going to use simple words and not spoil it for anyone by summerizing it for you. Title, protection, knowledge, secrets reveled, war, and love confessed. Also, image living in the future except that we do not know much of the people and the Earth's past while some are able to control elements? Thank you Erik for another great read!!

I want more!

I absolutely love the concept of this book, the world, and the characters. Here, Schubach has created a rich tapestry of people, places, and environment that comes together in an epic new world. The first characters we meet in this brave new world are Laney Herder and Techno Knight Celeste. One a serf practicing forbidden magic, the other a noble who doesn't agree with the proscription, the two work together to find a way for Laney to flourish in a new role. Throw in a few plot twists and you're reading about their struggle to stop what may be the next big war, and the end of life as they know it. We see quite a few different ways that mankind is surviving and expanding their knowledge of not only their world, but the world that was destroyed so long ago. Not only that, but hopefully by opening this world to other authors, Schubach has created fertile ground for many stories to come in this exciting world. Great book, great story.
