Historic London 1922!Jose Raul Capablanca was the superstar of chess in 1922 and London was his first serious chess in the 15 months since he had won the championship title from Emanuel Lasker. Capa was the chessplayer whom even non-players could identify. But the tournament signified not only Capa's return to the game, it was also something of a revival of international chess after four years of war and four more of recovery. The new world champion would ease into first place undefeated ahead of future world champion Alexander Alekhine. The young Dutchman Max Euwe was honing his skills that would also eventually take him to the top of the chess world. And Richard RĂ©ti was about to unveil his €œOpening of the Future€ €“ 1.Nf3!.London 1922 is important for all these reasons, but it also served as the setting for the creation of the famous €œLondon Rules which would for years govern the way in which prospective challengers to the title would have the right to play the champion. As an added bonus, all fourteen games of the 1921 Capablanca-Lasker title match with annotations by Capa himself have been added to this new 21st-century edition. Complemented by more than a dozen archival photographs and a Foreword by Andy Soltis, London 1922 belongs in the library of every chessplayer!

Historically Important. Meager Annotations.
By R. Tobias
London 1922 was a historic tournament. It was Capablanca's first major tourney after taking the World Championship from Lasker the previous year. It also was something of a restarting of big time international chess after the chaos of World War I. This is a modernization of Maroczy's original volume, converted to algebraic and the annotations redone in the modern style of being placed right after the move rather than in small footnotes. There are some excellent games here. Alekhine included four of them in his best games collection. Other prominent masters like Vidmar, Rubinstein, Bogoljubow, Reti and Tartakower added to the quality of the chess. As a bonus, Capablanca's notes to all 14 games of the 1921 World Ch match are included. But, the major shortcoming of this book is that the annotations in both sections are rather meager. Insightful when present, yes. But unfortunately, ten, twenty, even thirty or more moves are given frequently without comment. And what annotations there are are often verbal only, with no moves given. Of course there are numerous alternative variations given, but the overall feeling is that these notes are more for appreciating and enjoying than they are for learning from. GM Soltis' foreward is a highlight of the book, with good advice on which games to look at for endgames, attacks, great defense, etc. A good book, but don't expect much instruction.

Nice flavor of chess 90 years ago
By Frank Hoffmeister
The re-edit tournament book of London 1922 is a great find for chess history lovers. Andrew Solties gives a straight introduction about the significance of this first great tournament after WW I, including all the stars but ex-champion Lasker. London 1922 also got famous for the "Capablanca" rules on world championship matches which could only be complied with by Alekhine in 1927. They are duly presented in the foreward by Soltis.

With respect to the games, Hungarian top GM Maroczy offers his insights. Compared to Alekhine's books on New York 1924 or New York 1927, his comments are a bit meager. But they still offer the reader an idea about the level of GM thinking at the time, in particular when faced with new ideas from the hyper-modern school (Rti, Tartakower).

I found this book nicely presented for a quick read through. It lacks a bit the depth of analysis, but never mind! If you want to know how Vidmar destroyed Bogoljubow or how Capablanca and Alekhine convened a GM draw, this is the original source to have!

Absolutely satisfied!
By Oscar
And I would be it even "more than absolutely" if I could write here in my native language!

About the product: it was brand new, very well wrapped and protected against the dammages of the postal transport which happen sometimes.

This little book is well printed, interesting, and I received it at the right time, without delay.

So thanks for all to the kind seller!

Sincerly yours, Oscar Sutter!
