My name is Terry Dow, and I am a preacher. At least I was (but still am at heart) before the worst depression of my life wrapped its tentacles around me and changed my life forever. At the time of this writing I have been hospitalized for depression a total of seven times in the past two years. Yes, preachers are human, too, and in the Bible we read of several servants of God who have endured periods of depression (which I discuss in the last chapter of this book).
I am writing this book as a release for me. Many awful events have occurred in my life, and I just want to get it out in the open. I was not born with a Bible in my hand; I have done many terrible things in my life. Writing has become very therapeutic for me. Many thanks to my psychotherapists and peer supporters at S.V.M.H.I (Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute) for introducing me to the wonderful world of writing as therapy. It works for me!
Second, I am writing this book as a revelation to my daughters, family and friends. I want them to know who I am, what I have been through, and how I have endured. I especially want my daughters to know how much I love them, and that they can make it through anything in life. Just read about what Dad has been through, yet here he is, alive and kicking!
Finally, I am writing this book as a resource for everyone who has suffered with depression or just want to know more about it. Often, preachers “hit people over the head” with Bible verses like PHILIPPIANS 4:8- Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things (King James Version). That may be well and good; however, if one is so very depressed that he or she no longer desires to live, how does one practice that verse in life? What are the tools that will help one get a handle on life in order to deal effectively with depression? How can anyone who has never experienced deep depression truly help those (in practical terms) who are in its grip?
When I was young, the phrase “holy hell!” was commonly used to express irritation or anger. There is nothing, however, that is “holy” about hell! The Bible teaches that hell is: a place of damnation (Matthew 23:33); a place of fire that will never be extinguished (Mark 9:43); a place of eternal torment (Revelation 20:10). You may not believe in hell or the Bible: that's okay, we can still be friends. I titled this book “un” Holy Hell due to the fact that my mental illness, clinical depression, has been an unholy hell on this earth for me most of my life.
I am not a psychologist, but I have included practical tools in this book that I learned while I was a patient at S.V.M.H.I. It is my hope that everyone who reads this book will find hope, encouragement, and inspiration to endure and triumph over all that life gives. May you too be a thriver, not just a survivor!
Best regards,
Terry Dow

Brave, bold and beautiful
By Heather Fossen
This book is the story of a man and his unrelenting spirit facing the trials and tribulations of life along with a profound struggle with mental illness. Complete with intimate accounts of the series of events that truly shape his life, he bravely discloses the good and bad.....along with the terribly ugly.
Terry begins this journey with fond recollections of the wonderful memories of his childhood, ranging from family activities to favorite television shows. Just as smoothly, the mood shifts to reveal unspeakable acts that remain behind closed doors as well as vivid detail of the continued abuse.
As an adult, he chronicles the downward spiral and his eventual breakdown leading up to several hospitalizations in mental institutions over the span of a relatively short period of time. Terry continues with a particular hospital stay that would forever change his life. He also includes actual journal entries throughout his intensive treatment and discovers a plan to help him stay well. There is also a chapter devoted solely to biblical accounts, people and scripture regarding severe depression.
This remarkable story was, without a doubt, one of the most powerful books I have read on the subject of mental illness presented in a brave testimonial. Mr. Dow's intrinsic good nature and sense of humor shone throughout regardless of circumstance. I did notice several 'notes' to the reader that I thought would present an issue but later found them to be incredibly endearing and personal. Terry also achieves greatness in this publication when he specifically broke down Mary Ellen Copeland's Wellness Recovery Action Plan or (WRAP). This invaluable information is also accompanied by several resources to aid others in their journey.
A proud, shining beacon of hope and recovery that I would recommend to anyone struggling with a mental illness or as an informative tool to any family or friends that have been touched by the often stigmatized condition.

A must own book
By Just A. Mann
This book is very insightful, and very well written. A must have for anyone that suffers with depression, or knows of someone that is dealing with it. I recommend this to anyone that wants to understand one of the "silent illnesses". I personally have known Terrys family for all of my life, whether it had been his sisters or his cousin that still lives on the "Shore" and I think of him more as a brother than just a friend.
