Still good after all these years!
By Amazon Customer
I first read Shanna years ago when it first came out. I remembered loving it then, so I bought the ebook to re-read. I still love the story, but I did have a few issues, most relating to the fact that this story has been around for while. First and foremost, there's way too much head-hopping going on, sometimes from one paragraph to the next. That just doesn't fly today. There was even one slight shift in the end to a horse's POV. Second, I've grown as a reader and feel the narration is overblown for today's market. Also, by today's standards, the heroine is too selfish and self-centered to relate to. Even as a historical romance heroine, the characterization feels very dated.

My only other complaint is the lack of punctuation. As a longstanding grammar-nazi, I would've noticed if the original mass market paperback had punctuation errors, so I'm pretty sure the missing commas are a result of either sloppy conversion from hardcopy to electronic data, or overzealous editing by today's poor standards, since most younger people haven't a clue how to properly use commas. I found it very distracting at times. There was even an error (typo) where a number was inserted into a word.

But none of this made me enjoy the story any less, and I was happy to support one of my first author-loves! Ruark is dreamy as ever! The writing, while a bit overabundant, is rich. The villains are rather over-the-top by contemporary standards with little to balance or help the reader understand their motivation. Overall, at nearly 700 pages, the story is overlong and could use some serious content editing to appeal to modern readers. Even still, it was lovely to dive back into one of my old favorites. If you enjoy historical romance with a boatload of description, you'll love Shanna.

Hang on, it's worth it.

It was actually another book in my collection and the reviews that it received, that brought me to 'Shanna' by Kathleen Woodiwiss. That book, 'The Winds of Fate,' by Elizabeth St. Michel, which bears a startling likeness to 'Shanna,' was poorly written and chocked with historical inaccuracies. I quit reading 'Winds' at the 50% mark and started to write my review. That's when I stumbled on the many comparisons of 'Winds' to 'Shanna' that were mentioned in others' reviews. An Amazon 'one-click' later and I was once again riding with a desperate heroine on the rainy, foggy streets of late-night London toward Newgate Prison in search of a temporary husband.

Beyond the nearly identical plots, 'Shanna' is much better written than 'Winds.' That said, had it not been for another reader's review of 'Shanna' that encouraged readers to hang on, I might have quit this book around the 40% mark. The title character's self-centeredness is both destructive and hard to stomach. I don't think I've ever read any other character that I wanted to reach through the pages to slap more than Shanna. She is absolutely infuriating. The depth and consistency of Shanna's characterization creating that reaction through the first 50% of the novel is an authorial accomplishment in itself, I suppose.

On the advice of anonymous 'Amazon Customer,' I continued reading. I won't say that I 'fell in love' with Shanna as her character slowly develops from self-absorbed brat to a woman who understands that her actions had and continue to have devastating consequences. I will say that I did come to like her somewhat more than I thought would have thought possible in the first half of the novel.

What of Ruark, the male protagonist? He's handsome (duh), enormously patient, smart, talented and eminently likable which makes him the perfect foil for Shanna's many imperfections. His best scenes were when he'd had a bellyful of Shanna's crappy treatment and let her know it. It was his faith and patience with her that also kept me reading. If nothing else, I wanted to see her come to full realization of just how badly her actions had jeopardized his very life especially in the second part of the novel when they're being held by pirates.

Secondary characters were also well developed, especially Shanna's father, Orlan, and Pitney, her faithful guard. Despite some questionable actions on his part, it was Pitney who served as a moral/ethical counterpoint to Shanna's miserable behavior. I liked him a lot and can say that I was a bit surprised by the revelation of his true identity at the novel's end. I didn't see any real reason for the subterfuge related to his identity, however.

There were some elements of this story that grated on me a bit. Among these are the almost-every-page references to Shanna's beauty and the almost sell-out quality of Ruark's real identity. While I suspected his true identity, I wanted him to remain as a freed 'bondsman' to see if Shanna could actually love someone of a lower social order. I guess my wish for this test of her 'reformed character' is just my lingering distrust coming out.

Bottom line: Do I recommend it? Yes. Despite a truly aggravating title character, at times too florid language and editing errors made in the transition from print to digital versions of this story, hanging on 'til part two of the novel will find you rewarded with an engaging, fairly well written story. Happy reading!

Long yet entertaining
By Amazon Customer
I remembered reading part of this book years ago visiting someone but never got to finish it. I am glad I found it while browsing because I'd forgotten the name and author. I started from the beginning and despite being a bit long winded, it still kept me wanting to figure out what would happen, mostly to Rourke's character. I found I didn't want to skip ahead or I might miss details because the author has fun with inside jokes to add humor or intrigue later. Shanna herself can be a frustrating character at times and I don't normally enjoy books with wealthy, drama queen heroines who have trouble making up their mind, but she started to grow on me as the story progressed and her character grows. She finally realizes she's not perfect and tries to improve instead of whine. I'll say it again, some parts are very long winded but I found myself caring about or simply enjoying certain characters and their parts in the story. It had me wanting to see where everything would end up. The attention to detail is almost too much at times, and I shook my head a few times, but it definitely sets a tone and gives quite a clear picture of when and where you are. It's not for everybody, but overall a fun read and I'm glad I gave it a chance since historical romance isn't normally my thing. It reminded me of watching a mini-series every time I sat down to read a few chapters . There is drama, humor, adventure, love, and a little mystery. I am now more open to other books like this in the future (just maybe a little shorter.)
